Which Vintage Style Trousers are right for you?

Vintage Style Trousers

When it comes to incorporating vintage style into your wardrobe, trousers can be a versatile and timeless addition. However, with so many different options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right pair for your personal style. The key to finding the perfect vintage-style trousers for you is to first consider the occasion and your body shape.

For a more formal look, high-waisted trousers with wide legs can add a touch of elegance. For a casual yet chic option, opt for a pair of cropped flares. Additionally, consider the fabric and colour, as well as any unique details like pleats or prints. With the right combination, you can effortlessly achieve a vintage-inspired look that suits your individual taste.

Which Vintage Style Trousers are right for you

A bit of history and why we love vintage trousers…

It is safe to say that the acceptance of women wearing trousers did not really happen until the 1940s, during the wartime era. This shift in fashion was mainly driven by the fact that many women were now working in factories, where trousers provided them with safety and warmth. Before that, only the wealthy had started embracing trouser trends, which were influenced by beach pyjamas that emerged in the late 1920s.

There are a few fashion images from that time that showcase women wearing trousers, particularly sailor-style slacks. These trends were a result of the increasing popularity of sports among women. Initially, the trousers worn by women in the 1940s were adapted from men’s fashion as the demand for functional clothing grew. They were more about practicality than style, but as women tend to do, they found ways to make them work in their favour. Therefore, in my tireless quest for inspiration to find the perfect vintage trousers, I present to you our various styles, along with a touch of history. Understanding which shapes tend to gravitate towards each style and the reasons behind their choices will also be explored.

The 40s High-Waisted Swing Pant

Introducing the fabulous 40s high-waisted swing pants, designed to catch every eye with their figure-flattering silhouette that sits just right. Meticulously crafted with utmost precision, this pant showcases delicate darts that effortlessly enhance your curves, effortlessly flaring out from the upper hip for a touch of graceful elegance. To add a dash of sophistication, four tastefully sized shell buttons adorn the left side, making a subtle yet statement-worthy detail.

This particular design seamlessly harmonises with a variety of blouses, giving you the option to tuck them in and slightly loosen them for that perfect waistline accentuation.

For a truly polished and put-together look, I wholeheartedly recommend pairing these pants with a chic short jacket, such as the coveted Americana. Trust me, this combination will leave you feeling utterly stylish and effortlessly chic.

Shape and fit advice:

Less wide legs mean pear shapes find this style too lean on the thigh area. This style seems to work wonders on those without a defined waist, like pillars and inverted triangles. Many apple-shaped ladies have liked this style. If you have a flat bottom, this style is great because the high waist creates shape.

Sailor Slacks

Sailor slacks, inspired by the timeless fashion of the 1930s and 1950s, have had a long-lasting impact on contemporary style. These iconic garments continue to grace the runways, capturing attention with their distinct designs. The allure of Sailor Pants lies in their ability to create an instantly flattering silhouette; the high waist and wide legs seamlessly enhance one’s figure.

These classic features pay homage to the vintage aesthetic, reminiscent of early men’s trouser designs with their front-opening buttons. The enchanting result is an incredibly flattering fit, as the trousers elongate the legs and accentuate the waist, offering a slimming effect.

Crafted from a luxurious blend of viscose and polyester, these slacks provide comfortable wear with a subtle stretch and airy feel. Their utmost versatility allows for effortless styling, be it dressing up or down, lending itself effortlessly to any occasion or activity.

Shape and fit advice:

You must remember that the use of buttons on the front means that this area will draw attention. Because they are functional, there may be some gaping if they are very tight. Some ladies like this, and some ladies do not.

This style is popular with all shapes but works best on hourglass, pillars, and average pear shapes. Extreme pear shapes will find these a little tight on the thigh.

Yoke Pants

These trousers draw inspiration from the elegant beach pyjama fashion of the late 1920s and 1930s, evident from the V-shaped yoke panel at the front. The design takes cues from the classic sailor pant pattern, featuring a wide waistband that sits comfortably on the natural waist. Adding a touch of charm, four large wooden buttons embellish the sides.

However, the true magic of this style lies in the V-yoke panel, which not only provides a flattering fit but also ensures that the tummy area remains controlled without compromising comfort. The soft and gracefully draping fabric on the leg completes the ensemble.

Shape and fit advice:

We have been more generous with the waistband on this, which means that the style will fit ladies who have a wider waistline. The yoke on the tummy holds in, but it will not behave like control pants…

This style works very well on apple shapes and extreme pear shapes due to the wide legs but will not work well for hourglasses without an adjustment to the waist band.

40s Tailored Pleated Trousers

The wide waistband of these trousers sits comfortably on the natural waist, while the front features two deep pleats that seamlessly flow into the front creases. The back is designed with darts, ensuring a flattering fit for the bottom, and the style is completed with turn-ups.

They are specifically crafted to create a defined silhouette reminiscent of the boxy 1940s look. The addition of pleats and pockets adds extra volume to the hip area, enhancing the waist for an eye-catching effect.

Shape and Fit Advice:

Pleated trousers are not for ladies who are overly conscious of their tummy area or who want to avoid bulk. However, for straight pillar shapes, inverted triangles, or those who wish to disguise a flat bottom, this is a great style that creates shape.
